The vision of Catholic Healthcare West's Cardiovascular Research Center is to develop a cardiovascular research program directed toward patients who require treatment beyond the normal standard of care. Lead by Nabil Dib, M.D., MSc, F.A.C.C., director of Cardiovascular Research, the team of researchers is proud to be involved in the development of several research programs.
The Cardiovascular Research Center is working to develop the following programs:
- Atherosclerotic evaluation: Monitoring the progression or regression of atherosclerosis can be obtained through intravascular ultrasound technology using virtual histology. This information may be used in addition to genetic information.
- Gene expression: Identifying cardiovascular disease in the early stages will enable clinicians to provide the best outcome with early intervention. This area of research will provide patients with personalized medicine through blood samples containing more than 40,000 genetic markers identified for each individual.
- Myogenesis: Approximately two million hospital admissions for congestive heart failure occur annually. In an effort to find a much needed alternate treatment option for patients with heart failure, researchers within the Cardiovascular Research Center will participate in a cell therapy study for transplanting myoblasts into damaged areas of the heart. Researchers believe these transplanted cells may have the ability to regenerate cardiac-like muscle that has been damaged from a previous heart attack. The center's development of a cell therapy program is providing alternative treatment options for patients with chronic heart failure.
- Structural heart disease: Percutaneous valve replacement or repair for conditions such as aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation offers an alternative treatment for patients with endstage heart disease. Other devices have been developed for congenital heart conditions, such as atrial septal defects.
